Anti-Oxidants Improve Skin
Antioxidants Improve Skin Quality
39 Volunteers with healthy normal skin of skin type 2 (Burns easily; tans minimally) were divided into 3 groups. For 3 months, Group 1 was supplemented with lycopene 3mg/ day, lutein 3mg/day, beta-carotene 4.8mg/day, alpha-tocopherol 10mg/day and selenium 75ug/day. Group 2 was supplemented with lycopene 6mg/day, beta-carotene 4.8mg/day, alphatocopherol 10mg/day and selenium 75ug/day. Group 3 were given placebos.
A significant improvement in most parameters was demonstrated in groups 1 and 2. Roughness, scaling, smoothness and wrinkling of the skin were determined by the Surface Evaluation of Living Skin (Visioscan) and skin density and thickness were determined by ultrasound. Roughness and scaling were improved by the antioxidant micronutrients and both skin density and thickness were significantly improved. There were no changes to any parameters in group 3.
